Green Spot Under Acrylic Nail

Green spot under acrylic nail. Some nail fungus from artificial acrylic nails may cause the natural nail to detach from its nail bed. Patients likely have a history of prolonged exposure to water or detergents. Green nail syndrome or GNS is an infection of the nails that leads to a greenish discoloration of nails wherein the underneath skin of the nails discolors which makes the nails appear green.

The condition is usually confined to one or two nails and can involve fingernails or toenails. The bacteria has grown because it has found a nice damp dark area to live and thrive. Pseudomonas are a common run-of-the-mill bacteria that can turn the nail green were mould is actually a fungus.

Since the discoloration is underneath the nail it will not disappear with washing or scrubbing. This type of infection can also happen if you reglue the artificial nail before you clean the gap. The treatment for green nails is to remove the enhancement and trim clean and disinfect the nail to kill the pseudomonas bacteria.

And this green discoloration varies from blue-green to dark green to bluish-grey and the discoloration depends on the extent of infection. The green color is a stain and will remain until the nail has grown out though most likely the bacteria is no longer active once exp. Although this green discoloration may have the appearance of a mold this is NOT a mold.

See posts photos and more on Facebook. There was a time when techs were taught to treat the nail to remove a green spot. When the acrylic nails are lifted or they are not fitted properly over the natural nails water gets in easily and thus it provides a breeding ground for the infection.

If this happens be sure you perform proper wound care to prevent infection. It happens mostly when you are applying these nails yourself. Typically the nail does not provide a sustainable environment for these bacteria to grow however when conditions are perfect such as when moisture gets trapped these bacteria make a home either on top of the natural nail and under an enhancement.
